Improved Thumbnails Situation for 3D Files

I’m using TagSpaces specifically to manage my library of 3D .stl files of my D&D miniatures, and it still seems to be the best thing out there for the final state of organization, but it’s a little clunky in some ways, especially when getting started.

  • It would be nice if there could be a button to auto-generate thumbnails for an entire folder or selection. I think you’re totally right to not auto-generate thumbnails for 3D files by default, but clicking the button to auto-generate a bunch of thumbnails and then walking away to microwave my lunch would be a much better use of my time than clicking through all my models, rotating the renderings, and clicking two more buttons to set the image as my thumbnail.
  • On that front, I’d love the ability to edit default rotation and zoom for 3D files previews/thumbnails, possibly with different settings per file extension. As it is right now, all of the thumbnails seem to generate a top-down view of my miniatures, which is to say that they are all just a circle. This lovely Obsidian plugin has settings like this available when opening 3D files, so perhaps it could serve as inspiration. • In the meantime, could you add a keyboard shortcut for the “Set as Thumbnail” function? Keyboard is always faster than clicking, especially if I need to open up a menu to find the button at all. If I must manually rotate every miniature in order to get useful thumbnails for now, at least this would be an impactful band-aid until custom auto-rotation can hopefully be implemented.
