When I update, I lose tags or groups

Several times over the last few years, when I installed an update I lose some work.
Once, I lost ALL the tags on my files :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:.
But in the previous update to the last, I lost a Tag Group with dozens of tags in the group.
The tags still appear on the files (thank goodness), but the group is AWOL.
When I right click on a tagged file, it does give the option to Add Tag to Group and it lists that missing Group, but the group doesn’t show on the Tag Library page.

Are you loosing only a particular tag group, or all tag groups or even locations ?

A specific tag group is no longer showing in my tag library.
The tags still exist, and they show up on the tagged files. Interestingly, I can click on a particular tag and still add it to the missing tag group, but the tag group doesn’t show up on the tag library page?

I have had this same issue…it has happened a couple of times now where I open up tag spaces and one entire sub-group in the tag library is missing from the left side bar…the tag still exists as i can bring it up but not sure how i can retrieve the grouping in the side bar…the first time it was just a couple of tags but this last time there were quite a few tags in that group and would prefer not to have to redo them all
Thank you!

I figured out a fix…if you go to the three dots next to tag library and click on it and then export library…all of these tag library sections are shown (even the missing ones)…you can then export the missing section, then import it back in and it comes back.

Brilliant. That worked perfectly. All tags present and accounted for.

I had the same issue after upgrading. Clicking “export library” did not help. I tried reindexing the tags, but that only brought some of them back into the library, and none of them are sorted properly. I’m beyond disappointed—I spent a long time curating my tagging system, and I am at a loss for how to recover it. I even tried reverting to a previous version, but that didn’t work either. Has anyone had success with other fixes?

Are your other tags still in existence? Can you see them on tagged files?
That was my case and the export/import made them reappear in their entirety.

From now on, I am going to periodically export all my tags just for safety as a backup. I think this should be part of everyone’s process. Maybe a prompt to ask you to back this up would be good as you closed the program down?

I hope you find a resolution. I know how frustrating losing all that data can be - in an earlier update several years ago, I somehow lost all my tags and tagging. Fortunately, I hadn’t made that many tags at that time.

Fortunately, the tags still exist on the file itself (a file tagged “photo” is still tagged “photo,” for example), but the export/import function does not make it reappear in the tag library.

Reindexing the tags actually does work for repopulating the tag library, but in my case, it has to be done subfolder by subfolder, and it doesn’t sort them into their original groups. I’ll have to do that manually (at least they kept their color coding).

And your suggestion is a good one—I’ll absolutely back up my tag library once I’ve properly collated as much as I can. Definitely a best practice for TagSpaces users going forward.

Edited to add (July 28, 2025): It looks like the “collect tags from current location” option in the drop-down menu only pulls in the first 500 tags, and it does so regardless of whether those tags have already been sorted into another group. Beyond that, I don’t have any way of pulling in unsorted tags; the only way would be to manually retype each one that is missing. Sadly, I don’t know if I will be able to recover my list. It’s really unfortunate, because if I can’t restore my sorting, I may just stop using TagSpaces entirely.
